Our Schools

Healthier, happier and successful lives

Self-regulation skills shape nearly every outcome in a child’s life.

The Dunedin Longitudinal Study found that children ranking in the top 20% of self-regulation skills:

• are 4× less likely to have a criminal conviction

• are 3× less likely to attempt suicide

• spend 4× less time on benefits by age 38 than those in the bottom 20%

These skills can be learnt and practised. Those who improve their emotion regulation skills have been shown to reduce aggressive behaviour, improve peer relationships, improve focus and increase wellbeing.

For teachers and schools, this means fewer classroom disruptions, better attendance, and calmer learning environments where every student has the chance to thrive.

Support students to stay steady, focus and thrive.

  • “While I was playing, I noticed that I was holding my breath and my muscles were tensing… so I relaxed them. After that, I knew what to do.”

    — Student (age 10) after playing for just one hour

  • “It helped me with the breathing. It calmed me down. The game calmed me down. Helped me know how to breathe.”

    — Student (age 11)

  • “It made me more calm... the game helped me to walk away or take some deep breaths.”

    — Student (age 10)

  • “If people were annoying me, before I played the game I’d yell at them and tell them to stop. Now, I take deep breaths and walk away. It’s a lot easier to walk away. It feels good.”

    — Student (age 9)

  • “[In the game I was] learning how to control my emotions and like [practising] how can I do this … like breathe in this way and like relax your muscles. If you’re in like a tough game, you can just relax your muscles.”

    — Student (age 12)
